PROJECT

Reduction of Energy Consumption towards Sustainable Environment

BRIEF

Parents and children (ages 4-9 years) in New York City, Westchester (White Plains & Scarsdale) Acceptance of task-based parental instruction to close the lights while leaving the room to save electricity.

PROCESS

Type of Nudge: Making salience, hot spot, fun, interactive, cognitive learning Duration & Benefit: 24-day testing for intervention with choice of 2 sets in the house.

SOLUTION

Graphically-assisted nudges developed as 3 cutout templates, printed at home, and the affixed to a light switch plate.

  1. Fish & Bowl – child understands that the fish is “out of water” and they want to help it get back to where it belongs (the fish bowl).
  2. Bug Motif – uses the “cognitive learning effect” where the child remembers to switch off the light by associating it with the bug’s color or a name he/she has given the bug.
  3. Basketball – uses a child’s desire to explore and understand by exercising her/his manual skills (put down the string holding the basketball)
